NFL news, live updates: Terry McLaurin suffers season-ending knee injury; Eagles QB Jalen Hurts reportedly out for season with blood clots in lungs

Yahoo Sports Staff Updated Tue, October 20, 2026 at 9:30 PM UTC About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Week 6 of the NFL season is a wrap … and unfortunately, Monday night's showdown between the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers wasn't without its bumps and bruises. Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin was carted off with what turned out to be a season-ending knee injury , while 49ers Pro Bowl wideout Mike Evans exited with Achilles soreness.

But before that, Monday morning brought some unexpected news, as the Colts announced they fired GM Chris Ballard, who's been in the role since 2017. Indianapolis fell to the Titans on Sunday .

Also on Monday morning, the Philadelphia Eagles and NFL agent Nicole Lynn released a joint statement on the status of Jalen Hurts, clarifying his diagnosis and treatment plan. He will reportedly be out for the season as he undergoes treatment with blood thinners after a diagnosis of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and blood clots in his lungs, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The long-awaited return of Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell is right around the corner. But in order to activate Dell, the Texans had to create space for him on the 53-man roster.

As a result, they are waiving linebacker Jamal Hill, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston .

This season, Hill had continued his role as a special teamer and defensive reserve for Houston. In five games, he recorded four total tackles, including two solos.

While it appears as though rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels will once again get the nod for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, the team isn't closing the door on a potential Week 7 Baker Mayfield return just yet.

Greg Auman of Fox Sports reported Tuesday that the Bucs have pushed their weekly QB news conference from Wednesday to Thursday.

That's somewhat noteworthy as they continue to evaluate Baker Mayfield's recovery from the thumb injury that's sidelined him since Week 3 .

On Sunday, Tampa Bay will take on the Carolina Panthers on the road.

Philadelphia is shaking up its running back depth.

The Eagles have signed Elijah Mitchell to the practice squad. In corresponding moves, Philly has also waived Jaydon Blue and waived-injured Carson Steele.

Currently, only Saquon Barkley, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, and Dameon Pierce are active running backs on the 53-man roster.

The Rams have signed a new kicker, bringing in veteran Brandon McManus.

A week ago, Los Angeles cut Harrison Mevis after a poor kicking performance and signed Blake Grupe. The replacement kicker made a field goal last weekend, but then tore his ACL making a tackle on a kick off in the first quarter.

McManus has been in the league since 2014, and spent last season with the Packers. He was 24-of-30 on field goals, making only 6 of 12 attempts from 40 yards and beyond.

If you're tired of international games, you're out of luck.

NFL EVP Peter O'Reilly told reporters at league meetings on Tuesday that the league is considering adding a 10th international game next season, the maximum allowed by the current CBA.

O'Reilly did not mention whether the NFL would be playing in any new cities or countries, but reiterated a past sentiment that the league has a high interest in a game taking place in Asia.

Tyler Loop drilled an iconic game-winner earlier this season in Brazil , but his job isn't safe in Baltimore.

Loop faced scrutiny over the weekend after he missed a 49-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter of a three-point road loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Loop, who infamously pushed a potential game-winning 44-yard FG wide right in what was an AFC North title game last season, is 10 of 13 on field-goal attempts this season.

And for the second time this season, the Ravens have brought in Jake Moody to provide some competition. On Tuesday, Baltimore once again signed Moody to its practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Moody in the third round back in 2023. He's converted 64-of-82 field-goal attempts and 107-of-110 PATs throughout his career. Moody ended last season with the Washington Commanders but lost a training camp battle with rookie Drew Stevens for the kicking job.

NFL EVP Peter O'Reilly told reporters at league meetings that this weekend's matchup between the Steelers and Saints in Paris is still on as scheduled.

Paris has had protests and riots, but O'Reilly said, "We're confident in our operational and security plans…being very vigilant in everything we do and all of our planning."

Indianapolis has signed veteran wide receiver Mecole Hardman to its practice squad.

The wide receiver was with the Buffalo Bills last season, but played in only 2 games. He had a single regular-season target, but did not catch it.

Hardman did play in Buffalo's lone playoff game and caught a four-yard touchdown in the team's loss to the Broncos.

The Giants have reportedly released linebacker Jihad Ward, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo .

Ward saw little playing time in his two games with New York, recording just one solo tackle.

Over the course of his career, the linebacker has played in 138 games and has 200 total tackles, including 24 sacks and three forced fumbles.

The Dolphins are switching kickers, signing Zane Gonzalez to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, Miami has released Riley Patterson.

Gonzalez played in nine games for the Falcons last year. He made 19 of his 22 field goal attempts, missing twice from longer than 50 yards, and once at a shorter distance. Gonzalez also missed one of his extra-point attempts.

Patterson attempted nine field goals for the Dolphins this season, hitting seven of them. The kicker missed his lone attempt from more than 50 yards and a 41-yard attempt. Patterson also missed an extra-point in the team's last game against the Bengals.

McLaurin suffered a torn patellar tendon in the Washington Commanders' 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, head coach Dan Quinn announced. As a result, he will miss the rest of the season.

McLaurin was running a route near the end of the first quarter of Monday's matchup at Levi's Stadium when he suddenly fell near the sidelines. Replay showed that McLaurin's left knee gave out on him and buckled as he was planting to the outside.

He remained down on the field for quite some time in front of the Commanders' bench, clearly in a lot of pain. A cart eventually came out for him. He hopped up into the back of the vehicle under his own power with his entire left leg in a full air cast, and players from both teams saw him off.

The Falcons are adding defensive depth by signing EDGE Charles Snowden from the Commanders' practice squad to their 53-man roster, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport .

Snowden had been with the Raiders for the last three years, seeing consistent game action over the last two. In his career so far, he has played in 22 games and has 67 total tackles with 4.5 sacks.

The EDGE spent time this year on the Cowboys' and Commanders' practice squads.

The Philadelphia Eagles received plenty of criticism after allowing quarterback Jalen Hurts to play in Week 5 despite knowing he was dealing with a blood clot in his calf. But after a review of the situation, the NFL reportedly does not feel that criticism was warranted.

The league reportedly found that the Eagles handled the situation " appropriately, " per The Athletic. Because of that, the team will not face punishment for their approach with Hurts, who is now expected to miss the rest of the 2026 season after multiple blood clots were discovered in his lungs.

The Tennessee Titans revealed Tuesday that they released defensive tackle Jordan Elliott in the wake of an undisclosed incident at the team facility.

The incident took place last Thursday, three days prior to the Titans notching their first win of the season, according to a statement from the organization.

"Following our review of the incident, we have made the decision to release Elliott from our roster," the statement read, via Titans team reporter Jim Wyatt.

"We will have no further comment on the matter."

Specifics of the incident have yet to be reported. But the decision to part with Elliott was universally agreed upon, according to an ESPN report , which also noted the NFL is aware of the situation.

Before practice this past Friday, Titans head coach Robert Saleh told reporters that Elliott wouldn't be available to participate that day because he was "dealing with personal stuff," per ESPN. He reportedly didn't travel with the team to Indianapolis on Saturday.

Elliott was among the inactive players the Titans announced ahead of their 26-20 triumph against the Colts.

Harris played five games for the Giants and took over the starting role during Sunday's loss to the Saints. He carried the ball four times for two yards against the Saints and totaled 31 rushing attempts for 99 yards. He also caught one pass for five yards.

The Giants' running back room sees Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary.

After Blake Grupe tore his ACL, the Rams are working out both veteran kickers Brandon McManus and Matt Prater on Tuesday, according to the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo .

Grupe tore his ACL after trying to make a tackle on the opening kickoff in his first game after replacing Harrison Mevis.

The New England Patriots have a revolving door at wide receiver.

A.J. Brown was injured in Week 1 and added to IR. He was activated this past weekend and made his return in the team's win over the Jets. Unfortunately for New England, Romeo Doubs left with a shoulder injury.

Doubs was forced to miss the rest of the game after the injury, and the Patriots have added him to injured reserve. This means that the wideout will miss New England's next four games and will be eligible to return at the start of Week 11, after the Patriots play the Detroit Lions in Munich.

The New England wide receiver appeared to suffer the injury while making an impressive touchdown grab. Drake Maye launched the ball to the end zone, and Doubs made a diving snag for the score.

Doubs currently leads the team in receiving yards. He has 261 yards and three touchdowns on 14 receptions.

The Denver Broncos have no plans to make a change at quarterback amid Bo Nix's rocky start. Head coach Sean Payton flatly said "no" when asked whether the team would consider going with another option at the position, per ESPN.

Payton added that some of Nix's issues are likely the result of the entire Broncos' offense struggling so far. Payton said he believes Nix's play will improve naturally as the rest of the offense shows improvement.

"[Nix is] going to become the by-product of all of the finer things that get improved, the improved play of our offensive line, the more efficient we are relative to balance running the football, and that's, you know, that's our job as coaches here.''

Payton also complimented Nix's ability to "climb through adversity," saying that was a reason the team selected him in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Through six games, Nix has tossed just six touchdowns against three interceptions. His 60.3 percent completion percentage is currently a career-low, as are his passing and rushing yards per game. In four of the team's six games, Nix has failed to eclipse 200 yards passing.

As if things couldn't get worse for the 2-4 Los Angeles Rams.

Head coach Sean McVay announced Monday that star wide receiver Davante Adams suffered a ruptured hamstring in Week 6's loss to the Arizona Cardinals and is now set to miss 6-10 weeks as he recovers.

Adams has 480 receiving yards and four touchdowns through six games this season and is averaging a career-high 16.0 yards per reception. He's the only Rams player with multiple receiving touchdowns this season after leading the team with 14 receiving touchdowns just last season.

Adams was just one of several unfortunate injuries of note that occurred for the Rams in Week 6, with new kicker Blake Grupe headed to injured reserve with a season-ending knee injury and DL Poona Ford out for the year with a biceps injury.

McVay also noted in his presser that star defensive end Myles Garrett will not return to practice this week, currently on injured reserve after undergoing knee surgery following his debut with the team in Week 6.

The Los Angeles Rams announced on Monday that kicker Blake Grupe has been placed on injured reserve after sustaining a knee injury in Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

The Rams signed Grupe last week to take over from Harrison Mevis. Grupe made his first field-goal attempt with the team in the first quarter, but on the ensuing kickoff he went for a tackle. Grupe didn't make the tackle and was sent flying, sustaining a knee injury.

The kicker was ruled out for the remainder of the game. In the fourth quarter, the Rams attempted an extra point, and punter Ethan Evans kicked it through the uprights. Earlier in the second quarter, L.A. went for two after scoring the touchdown, seemingly because they were without their starting kicker.

Los Angeles will now have to find yet another kicker. The Rams could bring back Mevis, but he is still just one game removed from missing both field goal attempts in the Week 5 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
