If you’ve ever lived with more than one cat, you probably know that there’s usually at least one who acts like they were elected to management.

For this household, that cat is Nigel.

Nigel is a Black Cat with a whole lot to say, especially when the other kitties are having far too much fun while he’s trying to relax on the bed. In the video, he sits upright like a tiny supervisor while Mom explains that he doesn’t need to police everyone else.

Nigel strongly disagrees.

Mom reminds him that the other cats are allowed to do whatever they want. Nigel immediately fires back with a perfectly timed meow that somehow sounds exactly like, “What?!”

And that’s where the meeting starts to unravel.

Mom tells Nigel he’s not the leader of the house. His response may technically be another meow, but the energy is unmistakably: LIES.

Honestly, I’m with the commenter who thinks Nigel is making a pretty convincing argument. I don’t know when this election happened, but he certainly believes his position is official.

Mom keeps trying. She tells him the only behavior he can control is his own, even though she quickly acknowledges he doesn’t exactly do that either. Naturally, Nigel has a rebuttal for that, too. His next vocalization sounds suspiciously like a little kid insisting that he’s a good boy.

The entire conversation is hilarious because Nigel seems to have an answer ready for every statement. You can practically watch him preparing his next defense while Mom talks.

Meanwhile, the actual crime appears to be that the other cats dared to enjoy themselves during Nigel’s designated relaxation time.

Another commenter calls him one sassy baby, which might be the most accurate job title available. Nigel absolutely believes keeping the other cats in line is part of his household responsibilities.

Do I think this conversation changed him? Absolutely not.

Nigel may have listened to Mom’s feedback, but I have a feeling he will be back on patrol the next time somebody gets too rowdy near his bed. Management doesn’t take days off.

Is There Really an ‘Alpha’ Cat in the House?

If one of your kitties behaves like Nigel, it can definitely look like you have a tiny feline boss running the place. Cat relationships, though, are usually more complicated than one permanent “alpha” calling all the shots.

VCA Animal Hospitals explains that relationships between cats are often individual, with personality playing a big role in how well felines live together. Some kitties are naturally more assertive, while others are relaxed or shy.

If one cat seems to control the room, watch what the others are telling you, too:

Give each cat separate places to eat, rest, hide, and use the litter box.

Make sure quieter kitties can move around without constantly being blocked or chased.

Step in if bossy behavior turns into repeated fighting, fear, hiding, or guarding important resources.

A little feline attitude can be funny. If everyone still feels safe and comfortable, your self-appointed manager may simply be Nigel-ing his way through life.
