It was believed to be Queen Elizabeth's favourite retreat, but it seems public opinion is divided on the delights of Balmoral. The Aberdeenshire castle – which was bought as a royal residence in 1852 – welcomed tourists for the first time this summer. Between July 1 and August 4, general access was available for £60 a head, while 45-minute guided tours – which were restricted to six a day – cost £100, or £150 with afternoon tea.

And she arrived in style by bringing back an old look: a denim skirt similar to the one she sported while competing in New York in 2004, when she fell to Jennifer Capriati in a controversial quarterfinal matchup. That match, which was plagued by poor umpiring, was cited later when electronic line-calling was introduced to Grand Slam tennis.

Some of Los Angeles' most popular beaches are partially or fully shut down due to harmful levels of bacteria. One hundred yards up and down the coast off the Santa Monica Pier and Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu have banned swimming and playing in the ocean due to 'bacterial levels exceeding health standards,' according to LA's Public Health. Other swim areas, like Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey and Las Flores Creek at Las Flores State Beach have their entire swim area closed down.
