Almost a quarter-of-a-century on from the devastating terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, America is once again haunted by the risk posed by global terrorist groups. Nothing as grotesquely spectacular as 9/11 has happened again, but yesterday's carnage in New Orleans is a grisly reminder that ghostly Islamist terrorists still lurk in Western societies, even across the Atlantic. The mayhem caused by the attacker – US citizen Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, whose truck carried an Islamic State flag – came out of the blue, at least from the perspective of the local authorities and police.

Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo was forced to endure a disgusting sideline moment before producing a stunning resurgence in Wednesday's Peach Bowl. The 22-year-old inspired a stunning comeback for the Sun Devils against Texas before it ultimately fell short in a 39-31 overtime thriller. And, while the finish of the matchup didn't end in fairytale fashion for Arizona, the beginning of Skattebo's game wasn't completely plain-sailing either. The Longhorns' defense produced a stellar job of holding off Arizona's offense through the first two quarters and tensions appeared to boil over on the Sun Devils' sideline.

A Los Angeles woman was killed after she was thrown from her boyfriend's car during a domestic dispute over the weekend. Police say Edgar Gutierrez, 34, and the unidentified victim - who had been together for two years - got into a fight outside of a home in North Hollywood on Saturday afternoon, KTLA reports. Gutierrez then got into a nearby car, at which point his girlfriend grabbed onto the vehicle, clinging to it as her boyfriend sped away.

The College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup between No 2 Georgia and No 7 Notre Dame was initially slated for 8:45pm ET on New Year's Day. But the game was pushed back amid investigations into the attack, which saw a man drive a truck into a crowd of New Year's revelers in New Orleans' French Quarter, killing 15.

Billionaire Tesla owner Elon Musk has revealed 'a bomb or very large fireworks' caused the explosion outside the front doors of Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. Wednesday's Cybertruck explosion is being investigated as an act of terrorism, occuring just hours after an unrelated terror attack in New Orleans which left 15 people dead. The $80,000 car - made by Trump ally Musk's company Tesla - was seen in a fiery blaze outside the front revolving doors of the hotel, killing one and injuring seven at around 9am, according to Las Vegas police.
