A woman was in critical condition on Wednesday after a bear attack in a forested area outside Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, police said. The attack on Tuesday occurred at the edge of the forest in Skofljica, some 6 miles southeast of the capital, as the woman was walking her dog, police said. The bear retreated into the forest after the attack and police have advised local residents to stay away and be cautious. "There are several hunters in the field at the same time, who are responsible for possibly deterring bears from points where contact with humans could occur," policesaid. "If it is necessary to increase the number of hunters in the field, we will do so." The incident came just days after authorities approved the culling of 206 brown bears, whose population in the area has grown to around 1,000 bears. The small Alpine nation of just over 2 million people is widely forested with many protected nature zones. Authorities occasionally approve bear or wolf culls despite strong opposition from animal rights groups. Two bear attacks on people were recorded in 2022, according to Slovenia's official STA news agency. The nation of Slovakia, to the northeast, has also grappled with a surging brown bear population as well as attacks on humans. Last month, lawmakers approved a plan to shoot about 350 brown bears in Slovakia after a man was mauled to death while walking in a forest there, the BBC reported. In 2024, awoman diedin Slovakia after being chased by a bear through dense forest and mountainous terrain. Germany charges three people with spying for Russia, potentially with intent to killNew Foto - Germany charges three people with spying for Russia, potentially with intent to kill

BERLIN, Germany (AP) — Three people in Germany were charged with working for one of Russia's intelligence agencies and could have been plotting to kill a man, the German Federal Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday. The three men arrested in the "particularly serious case" on June 19, 2024 in Frankfurt were identified as Robert A., a Ukrainian citizen; Vardges I., an Armenian national; and Arman S., a Russian citizen. Their full names weren't released in line with German privacy rules. "The spying operation presumably served to prepare further intelligence operations in Germany, possibly even leading to killing," the German Federal Prosecutor's Office said. German prosecutors said at the beginning of May 2024, Vardges I. received an order from a Russian intelligence agency to spy on a man living in Germany who fought in Ukraine's armed forces after Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. To do this, Vardges I. recruited Robert A. and Arman S., who are accused of trying to lure the man to a meeting in a cafe in downtown Frankfurt with the aim of identifying him and gathering further information about him. Because the man had previously been in touch with German police, no meeting ever took place, the Federal Prosecutor's Office said, adding that the three men remain in custody. The charges against the men, filed May 16, are the latest in a series of cases across Europe where Ukrainians and other nationals are accused of working on behalf of Russia's intelligence services. In May, German prosecutors saidthree Ukrainians were arrested in Germany and Switzerlandon suspicion of agreeing to send parcels containing explosive or incendiary devices from Germany to Ukraine, apparently at the behest of people acting for Russia. In April 2024, twoGerman-Russian men were arrested in Germanyon suspicion of espionage, one of them accused of agreeing to carry out attacks on potential targets including U.S. military facilities in hopes of sabotaging aidfor Ukraine, prosecutors said. Western officials have accused Russia and its proxies of stagingdozens of attacksranging from arson and sabotage to cyberattacks and espionage since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Russia has previously been accused of trying to kill people in Germany who have a connection to the war in Ukraine. In July 2024, Western officials saida plot was uncovered to kill Armin Papperger, CEO ofdefense company Rheinmetallwhich provides weapons to Ukraine. In 2019, a Russian national, Vadim Krasikov, was convicted in Germany of killing a Georgian citizen who had fought Russian troops in Chechnya. Krasikov was sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine in 2024. At his sentencing, German judges said Krasikov had acted on the orders of Russian authorities, who gave him a false identity, passport and the resources to carry out the killing.

I Didn't Want to Come Back'

Jeremy Renner revealed in his recently-published memoir, "My Next Breath," that he briefly experienced what he believes was death during the 2023 New Year's Day snow plow accident that nearly cost him his life. In a recent follow-up interview on Kelly Ripa's"Let's Talk Off Camera" podcast, the Oscar nominee described this moment as "a great relief." "It's a wonderful, wonderful relief to be removed from your body," Renner said. "It is the most exhilarating peace you could ever feel. You don't see anything but what's in your mind's eye. Like, you're the atoms of who you are, the DNA, your spirit. It's the highest adrenaline rush, but the peace that comes with it… it's magnificent. It's so magical." "I remember I was brought back and I was so pissed off. I came back, I'm like, 'Aww!' I came back and saw [my] eyeball and I'm like, 'Oh shit, I'm back.' Saw my legs. I'm like, 'Yeah, that's gonna hurt later.' I'm like, 'All right, let me continue to breathe.'" Renner wrote in his book that he briefly died about 30 minutes after his Sno-Cat, a large snow plow that weighs at least 14,330 pounds, ran him over on Jan. 1, 2023. Renner ultimately regained consciousness and was hospitalized for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries. His injuries included eight ribs broken in 14 places, a broken right knee and ankle, a broken left leg tibia and ankle, a broken right clavicle and shoulder and more. "I could see my lifetime," he writes in the book. "I could see everything all at once. In death, there was no time, no time at all, yet it was also all time and forever."Speaking to Ripa, Renner added that feeling like "a man that didn't want to come back" has made him now "really be able to be back here and live it on my terms as the captain of my own ship. And get on it or off it, I don't give a fuck. I'm going to live life on my own terms and for nobody else. [It's] very clear. The white noise is ripped away." After spending nearly a year in recovery, Renner has since gone on to return to acting via his Paramount+ original drama series "Mayor of Kingstown." He also filmed a role in Rian Johnson's next "Knives Out" movie, "Wake Up Dead Man," which is coming to theaters and Netflix this fall.
