Inside Dustin Diamond's Tragic Family Life: A Murdered Aunt, Untimely Deaths of His Brother and Mom, and Accusations His Dad Misused Funds

Dustin Diamond's family was already living through a difficult time before the young actor was cast as Samuel "Screech" Powers on Saved by the Bell

NEED TO KNOW

  • Dustin's older brother, Ryan, was born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart disease which left him severely disabled

  • Ryan's death at age 8 and a complicated family dynamic that followed as Dustin's star rose led to troubles for the actor

Dustin Diamond's troubles in life weren't all connected toSaved by the Bell.

In the latest installment of ID'sHollywood Demons,After the BellDiamond's father, Mark Diamond, provides additional context for some of the problems the actor and his family faced before fame ever hit.

Mark explained that his own family was no stranger to tragedy. When he was growing up, his own sister had been murdered at the age of 16. Years later, he and Dustin's mother, Jaimee Deane Diamond, would welcome their first son on his late sister's birthday.

The joyous moment was made more difficult when the couple learned that their son, Ryan, was born with Down syndrome and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a type of congenital heart defect.

"Most of these kids don't live past a year," Mark explained. "When Dustin was born, he was two years younger than Ryan, we were really, really worried that he might have Down syndrome, that he might have similar problems, but he was born healthy."

Ryan's abilities were limited, but Dustin stepped in to help where he could. "Dustin used to entertain him and play with him, and I think that was the beginning of his creativity."

Things took a turn when Ryan contracted measles, which led to an infection in his already-compromised lungs, in 1983. Ryan would ultimately die from the illness at 8 years old.

The impacts on Dustin were evident very quickly, though he struggled to express what he was going through. “Dustin had been a perky, outgoing kid. He was getting good grades and suddenly, he was morbid and failing in school," Mark said.

A friend of Dustin's who appeared in the documentary noted, “Dustin didn't talk about his brother that much. Dustin just didn't really want to talk about the pain from losing a brother.”

It was during this difficult period that the family considered acting as an outlet for Dustin. While Mark believed it would be one of many hobbies, that changed when Dustin started to experience success.

“I was the one taking Dustin on auditions and quite frankly, I thought, ‘He'll get tired of it.' But then he gets cast inSaved by the Bell," Mark explained.

Dr. Drew Pinsky shared his perspective on the situation, sharing, "Dustin looked to acting as a way to solve his grief. And now here he is, in a community, in a family where everyone else feels a part of something."

Mark would be the parent who devoted himself to Dustin's career. He explained, "Dustin's mother had been working for what had been the phone company, but when Ryan had his medical bills, we were forced into bankruptcy."

Tiffani Thiessen as Kelly Kapowski, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Zachary 'Zack' Morris, Mario Lopez as Albert Clifford

"We just didn't have the income we used to have and we got to the point where we had to make a decision and I gave up my job so I could leave and go to set," he continued.

Dustin later accused his family of misusing his earnings from the series. Mark says the accusations "really made me upset."

"I told him, 'Why are you throwing me under the bus when I can't pop myself on television [and defend myself]?' "

Mark noted that the earnings fromSaved by the Bell, which Dustin had previously said began at $1,250 per episode, weren't enough to mitigate the family's financial situation, and were further strained by the necessities of being a working actor. After taxes, gas and headshots, he claimed it “didn't leave a lot of money to do anything.”

Dustin continued withSaved by the Belland appeared on every iteration of the show from 1988 to 2000. He was in the midst of filmingThe New Classin 1996 when his mother, Jaimee, was diagnosed with cancer.

"She went downhill pretty quickly and Dustin saw that happening," Mark shared.

Dustin would go on to have several brushes with the law, serving jail timein relation to a 2014 stabbing.

In February 2021, the actor died after his owncancer journeyat 44 years old. Mark recalls getting the call from his son, learning that he had limited time left.

"He called me and he said, ‘I'm dying,' And I wanted to go back there and see him. He was afraid he was going to go out like his mother did.”

MGK Breaks Silence on Yungblud Feud Rumors: 'That S**t Hurt Me'

MGKrecently discussed his rumored feud withYungblud. In a podcast interview, Colson Baker (MGK) responded to rumors that his recent track includes a line directed at former collaborator and friend, Dominic Harrison (Yungblud). The duo has previously collaborated on songs “I think I’m OKAY” (2019) and “body bag,” which was released in 2020.

MGK sets the record straight on Yungblud feud rumors

MGK clarified rumors of an alleged feud with Yungblud on a recent episode of the Garza Podcast. For those unversed, he released a song with Fred Durst called “FIX UR FACE” on April 21. He confirmed this is the first single for his upcoming rap album and that he had penned the song himself.

When the song was released, fans couldn’t help but speculate that the lyrics were a supposed dig at Dominic Harrison. The lines were, “Mickey Mouse kids turned rockstars/ Leaving private school, tryna be outlaws.” Fans allegedly believe that it was a diss track directed at the English musician, who both attended a private school and appeared on the Disney program The Lodge in 2016.

However, the rapper gave a response that sounded more ambiguous than a definitive no. Baker stated, “The song is three minutes of lines about different things… Loyalty is really the only thing that matters… When I open my heart, that means I’m vulnerable, and I let you in. So, when someone’s given an opportunity to defend their friend, and they don’t, that breaks my heart. Like, it shatters me. And so, I think, be my friend the same way in public that you are in private.”

Continuing further, Baker remarked, “But it’s an angry line and an angry song… but that s**t hurt me.”MGK also lavished praise on Yungblud, calling him “super talented.” However, he indirectly chided Harrison for not taking a stand for him on the 2024 episode of The Osbournes Podcast.

Baker added, “But what I care about outside of everything, like, when the music’s over, it’s like, what do you stand for and what do you stand on? And that principle of loyalty—the way that it was done to me—I wouldn’t have done that.”

“Jim didn’t show up. No indication, no warning. I can’t say for certain why. He’s not here, so I can’t ask him," Sigler writes of the actor, who died in 2013. "But Jim had always shown up for me." When she returned toThe Sopranosafter her wedding for a table read, Sigler said she "expected some smiles," applause, or congratulations for her major life event. "Instead, the room was completely silent." The actress writes that only Gandolfini ended the awkward situation with an audible "ooof."

"It was clear: none of them were happy about this for me. It would take me two long years to understand why.” Sigler and Discala would split in 2005. She toldUs Weeklyin April that their "relationship was really toxic and complicated."

"A marriage at 20 is still a marriage," she added. "I needed a lot of proof to leave. When I went through his phone, I knew something shady was going on. All women feel that way. I wanted to share that not to bash him, but for other women. I felt like such a failure all the time, but I understood I was not going to survive much longer if I stayed in that marriage. I think he knew that, too."

Elsewhere in her memoir, Sigler praised Gandolfini, calling him "the sun around which the rest of us orbited." "He was larger than life. His energy filled the room. Sometimes I think he hated that power. But it was just part of him. He was magnetic— so big, so beautiful. His presence took up space in the most brilliant way. Jim was humble and present. He cared.”

Sigler has been open about her relationship with Gandolfini. In an October 2023 interviewwithMichael Rosenbaumfor hisInside of Youpodcast, she said she wished she could getThe Sopranoscast back together for one more episode.

"I wish we could just do one week of filming right now, because of my awareness of the world and what that [show] was and what we were a part of... I just wish I could experience it, like one episode, give me one episode right now," she said.

As for the type of episode she had in mind, Sigler said a family-heavy episode with "some sort of internal struggle. "I always loved moments when Meadow and Tony got quiet together. And it was — all our scenes when we would get quiet together the dialogue would actually be really limited. It would just be these heavy, pregnant pauses."

She then praised Gandolfini for wanting to bring the best out of her while working on the show. "Jim was the type of scene partner where it felt like he was there and his only intention was to make me as good as I could be," Sigler recalled.

"And it had nothing to do with him. Every time I worked with him, I felt like his sole purpose was... 'I'm going to help you give your best f---ing take, Jamie.'"
