Rif Hutton, who starred in episodes ofDoogie Howser, M.D. andGeneral Hospitalhas died at 73.

The actor died on Saturday, April 18 at his home in Pasadena, Calif., his wife, Bridget Hoffman, toldThe Hollywood Reporter. Hutton had previously been diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor.

PEOPLE reached out to reps for Hutton but did not immediately hear back.

ActorSteve Apostolinapaid tribute to Hutton in aFacebookpost on April 20, writing, “A remarkable human being has left this earthly plane."

"To say that Rif Hutton was one of a kind is a gross understatement. There will never be another like him,” Apostolina wrote, adding that Hutton was “incredibly bright and the hardest working person I’ve ever known.”

"I worked in the voice over community with him for over 30 years but I really got to know him well when I directed him in one of my early plays. And while I knew him and spent a fair amount of time with him, he’d rarely talk about himself, because he was a humble man,” the actor continued.

Apostolina remembered Hutton for his many talents and his community action amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes. "I was lucky to cross his path and I am a better person for knowing him," he said.

Hutton was born in San Antonio on Nov. 28, 1952. He is best known for his role as Dr. Ron Welch in theNeil Patrick Harris-led seriesDoogie Howser, M.D., from 1989 to 1993, as well as appearing as Lt. Cmdr. Alan Mattoni onJAGfrom 1997 to 2001.

The actor also played Lenny Caulfield inGeneral Hospitalfor 32 episodes from 2021 to 2022.

How Scott Patterson's character Sully exits “Sullivan's Crossing” in season 4

Following the announcement ofScott Patterson’s departurefrom the show in March, we’ve been waiting to see how the writers might handle his absence — especially given the actor’sstatementhinting that things didn’t go according to plan.

The most we get in the season 4 premiere is a brief explanation from Sully’s daughter Maggie (Morgan Kohan) during a conversation with Cal (Chad Michael Murray). “Sully just left. We can’t let things slide around here,” Maggie tells Cal.

She adds, “Sorry, I think I’m just feeling overwhelmed with him leaving like that. It just…it all took me by surprise.” It’s a line that almost feels like a wink to the audience, in the context of Patterson’s seemingly tense departure.

Beyond this conversation, there is no definitive write-off for Sully just yet. It looks like Sully is still out enjoying Ireland, but there are no hints at his return date. Cal and Maggie are left running the Crossing in the interim, navigating complicated guests and Maggie’s surprise ex-husband.

While the characters try to resume business as usual, Patterson's absence is palpable. We are left waiting for his face to appear in the season 4 opening credits. We miss out on the motivational heart-to-heart conversations between Sully and Cal. We don't get the healing, reconciliatory moments with Maggie or the quippy banter with the Cranebears.

Patterson's departure doesn't keep the writers from referencing Sully in character dialogue, but they don't commit to a proper goodbye either. So far, they have left the possibility of Sully’s reappearance in the show open-ended. It begs the question: Will they recast him?

As we saw in theseason 3 finale, Patterson’s character made the impromptu decision to join his romance novelist girlfriend Helen (Kate Vernon) on a trip to Ireland. Sully explained to Maggie, “It’s time for me to finally let myself go in a new direction.”

Although Sully promised that going to Ireland with Helen wasn’t going to change how much he loves the Crossing, it seems creative differences did change Patterson’s sentiment on returning to the show.

Ahead of season 4, showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth confirmed Patterson’s exit to EW.

“Season 3 ofSullivan's Crossingended with Sully leaving for Ireland, beginning a new chapter in his life. Season 4 picks up the next day, with Sully still overseas. While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative,” Roth said.

Patterson replied with his version of the departure. “The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue,” he said in a statement on Instagram. "It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact, and yet chose to say otherwise.”

TheGilmore Girlsalum concluded, "The fans deserved better than to think the embodiment of this character, me, would just disrespect not only the show, but them. In the end, we’re all fans of these characters and stories, and I’ll always support and defend the truth.”

Sullivan’s Crossingseason 4 airs new episodes Mondays on The CW.

Seven teenagers were shot, including two fatally, after a "planned fight" between juveniles at a North Carolina park escalated and several people opened fire, authorities said.

The gunfire broke out at Leinbach Park in Winston-Salem on Monday morning, according to police.

The fight broke out at the park before 10 a.m., and the "situation escalated significantly, leading to multiple people exchanging gunfire," the Winston-Salem Police Department said.

8 children fatally shot in Louisiana domestic violence incident: Police

Two people are dead, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Winston-Salem police identified them as 17-year-old Erubey Romero Medina, who was found in the parking lot of the park, and 16-year-old Daniel Jimenez Millian, who was located inside the park. Both had gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Additionally, four female teens -- ages 14, 15, 17 and 19 -- and an 18-year-old man were shot, according to Winston-Salem Police Capt. Kevin Burns. Officers located them in another nearby parking lot, with injuries ranging from minor to critical, he said.

The names of the injured minors will not be released, while the names of the adults are being withheld pending further investigation into their involvement, Burns said.

"Detectives are actively working to determine each individual's role in this incident," he said during a press briefing on Monday. "Preliminary information indicates that some of those injured may have also been involved in the shooting."

It is unclear how many firearms were involved, according to Winston-Salem Police Chief William H. Penn.

The incident was isolated to the park and remains under investigation, police said.

Leinbach Park is located near a middle school. Students at the school were safe, police said.

Chief Penn expressed frustration over the deadly mass shooting.

"I feel like everyone else. I'm frustrated, I'm angry, I'm sad," he said during the press briefing. "This didn't have to happen. It's senseless. And hopefully we as a community kind of get fed up together and just get more involved, get more nosy."

He urged parents to speak with their children and to take actions such as checking their backpacks before school.

"We gotta tell them to stay away from fights. I feel like I just had the same conversation about cellphones, fights and how just having those phones out, how that changes the behavior of our youth," the chief said. "And I'm saying it again -- stay away from the fights. It's not the same as it used to be."

Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill also urged parents to speak with their children and for people to report fights in the hopes of avoiding such deadly violence.

"I can't help but believe that somebody out there would have known about this fight taking place this morning and didn't pick up a phone and anonymously call and this could have been averted," O'Neill said during the briefing. "There is incredible sadness and tragedy in the homes of our neighbors tonight, and it all could have been averted."

LOS ANGELES (AP) —Eddie Murphytook a moment to look out at the star-studded room at the American Film Institute ceremony — at his family, his peers, the people who have shared his journey — and let it all sink in.

“Seeing all of my family, all my kids, my beautiful wife, and seeing all the different people I worked with, I’m just really filled up,” said Murphy, who received thelife achievement awardat the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday night. “This is a special moment. I wish y’all could feel what I’m feeling, see what I’m seeing. I almost teared up. I’m going to get backstage and cry.”

Just before accepting the award, Murphy was met with a standing ovation, stepping onstage and moving through the ballroom as the applause followed. Along the way, he passedSpike Lee,Martin Lawrence,Dave Chappelle,Chris Rock, Arsenio Hall and Judge Reinhold.

The tribute, which also featured appearances from Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, Eva Longoria, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Kenan Thompson, will premiere as a special onNetflixon May 31.

Murphy, 65, has moved from a teenage stand-up sensation to a breakout force on “Saturday Night Live” to a box office mainstay with films like “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Coming to America,” “The Nutty Professor” and the “Shrek” franchise.

Large images from those defining moments filled the venue stage, tracing a career that has crossed stand-up, television and film.

“Eddie made us laugh and made our nation feel better,” said Lee, who presented the award to Murphy. “I took a camera and told stories on how our nation could be better. … We both pushed culture forward. ... Every step of this journey, Eddie has been true to himself.”

Comedians pointed to Murphy’s influence across generations.

“There is no us without you,” Rock said.

Lawrence, who starred in the film “Life” with Murphy, shared a personal moment from early in his career, recalling how Murphy once declined his request for a photo. But now, that shouldn't be a problem since their children married each other in 2025.

“Now I can get all the pictures I want,” Lawrence said with a smile. “Because we're in-laws.”

Arsenio Hall, Murphy’s longtime collaborator on “Coming to America,” spoke about Murphy advocating for him in the film and highlighted the depth of his talent.

“When Eddie does a family film, he plays a whole damn family,” Hall said.

Chappelle reflected on studying Murphy’s stand-up as a teenager watching “Raw.” He described Murphy as one of the defining figures in the industry and shared a recent visit to his home, where seeing Murphy’s grandchildren playing offered a deeper perspective on his life.

“I would watch him every day after school like I was taking a class,” said Chappelle, who also spoke on an interview where he consideredrevisiting “Chappelle's Show,”a project he once stepped away from, calling it one of the most meaningful experiences of his career.

Chappelle said Murphy encouraged him to revisit the idea, and even joked about joining the project if it comes to fruition.

“You are still the hero I want to be,” he said.

Stevie Wonder described Murphy’s impact as something that extends beyond comedy. He showed his deep admiration for the comedian-actor.

“Laughter can make life livable,” Wonder said. “Eddie is more than a comedian … he is a universal reminder.”

Mike Myers, who co-starred in the “Shrek” films with Murphy, credited him with helping define one of animation’s most beloved characters, calling his character portrayal of Donkey a “masterpiece.”

Jennifer Hudson delivered a musical tribute with performances from “Dreamgirls,” backed by a house band led by Rickey Minor.

The gala, which raised more than $2.5 million to support AFI’s nonprofit education programs, also included the presentation of the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal to cinematographerAutumn Durald Arkapaw,who spoke about finding her voice through the institute.

Murphy’s career has spanned nearly 50 years, from stand-up stages to blockbuster films, with a versatility that has kept him relevant across generations. In 2023, he received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes and has spoken about embracing a deeper appreciation for his journey.

“Thank you for giving me this night that I will remember forever and ever and ever,” Murphy said. “I love you.”
