Prince Harry Reveals He “Didn’t Want” to be Royal Because “It Killed My Mum”

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’strip of Australia continues, the Duke of Sussex gave a nearly 20-minute long address at a conference in Melbourne.

Town & Country AUSTRALIA-BRITAIN-ROYALS

At the InterEdge Summit event, Prince Harry delivered the keynote address andspoke aboutmental health and grief. “When I was invited to speak at this summit, I wasn’t sure whether I was expected to speak as someone who, despite everything, has their shit together. Or as someone who, despite what it may look like, actually doesn’t have his shit together,” Harry said. “But I was struck by something quite simple — that while my experiences may be unusual, the feelings that come with them are not.”

He spoke about the loss of his mother,Princess Diana, who died after a car crash in Paris in August 1997. “In my experience, loss is disorienting at any age. Grief does not disappear because we ignore it. Experiencing that as a kid while in a goldfish bowl under constant surveillance, yes, that will have its challenges. And without purpose, it can break you,” he said.

Harry continued, “There have been many times when I’ve felt overwhelmed. Times when I’ve felt lost, betrayed, or completely powerless. Times when the pressure—externally and internally—felt constant. And times when, despite everything going on, I still had to show up pretending everything was okay, so as not to let anyone down. For many years I was numb to it, and perhaps that was easier then, but I also didn’t yet have the tools to deal with it.”

Following the address, he was in conversation with Australian business leader Brendan Nelson, and expanded further on his comments about his late mother. As he struggled with her death, he told Nelson, he rejected his royal role.

“I was like, ‘I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role—wherever this is headed, I don’t like it,’” Harry said. “It killed my mum and I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years. Eventually I realized, well, hang on, if there was somebody else in this position, how would they be making the most of this platform and this ability and the resources that come with it to make a difference in the world? And also, what would my mum want me to do? And that really changed my own perspective.”

Prince Harry and Meghan’s Australia visit continues tomorrow in Sydney.

Reba McEntire debuts song 'One Night in Tulsa' at Oklahoma bar

Inside Reba's Place on April 9, the country music icon with blazing red locks stood an arm's length from fans in the front row.

USA TODAY

"We have some new music we want to spring on y'all,"Reba McEntiresaid.

The excited crowd hooted and hollered. Some had driven all night for the chance to sit in the crowd of roughly 200 people. Some who lived in the same small town as the bar, Atoka, Oklahoma, dropped in to enter a lottery for a ticket to see the hometown queen. Other overflow guests received texts just moments before doors opened. The spontaneous additions grabbed standing-room-only spots on the second floor. Even more fans gathered outside on the nearby green space, listening through a simulcast. McEntire's wait staff lined the bar to watch.

"Since we are doing a show 'One Night in Atoka,' why don't we do a song that's called 'One Night in Tulsa'?" McEntire, 71, said.

As the violin cried and the piano pulsed, her mezzo-soprano cut through the opening line: "Well the thing about leaving / is that somebody stays / And the problem with goodbye / is it only goes one way."

Reba McEntire sings at her restaurant in Atoka, Okla. to fans.

Fans drove all night to meet the Queen of Country Music

In late March, the restaurant announced free tickets to watch McEntire sing. More than 35,000 entries poured in from four eligible states: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Kansas. A little over 100 lucky patrons were chosen.

Nine-year-old Mikayla Hoult and her father, Mike, drove more than 10 hours overnight from Illinois. They didn't have tickets, yet were still hoping to meet the famous singer.

"Because we weren't in any of the four states, I asked, 'Hey, this is probably a really good chance, Mikayla, for you to finally meet Reba. Do you want to go?' And she's like, 'Yes, I want to go.' So we got here this morning."

The risk paid off. When McEntire's gray-blue bus pulled up behind the restaurant, Mikayla held a sign that read, "Hi Reba! Could you sign me and my sister's fiddles, please?"

"She did not hesitate to sign," Mike said.

"It was amazing to meet her," Mikayla added.

Mikayla Hoult, 9, holds up the sign she made for Reba McEntire. The country singer signed Hoult's violin outside of "Reba's Place" in Atoka, Oklahoma. April 9, 2026.

Amy Shelby drove two hours from Tuttle, Oklahoma, pulling her daughter out of school for the chance to see the "Fancy" singer face-to-face.

"She just loves Reba and I knew this is something that she'd never forget," Shelby said. They did not have tickets either, but happened to be at the right place, right time.

Both families entered the lottery to get tickets to the show drawn at 5 p.m.

The highway town of Atoka

Atoka sits about 50 miles northeast of the Texas-Oklahoma border. Up until McEntire put it on the map as a tourist destination with her restaurant, the small town of 3,000 was a place to pass through, not a place to visit. On a typical weekday, about 30,000 cars move along U.S. Highway 69. On holiday weekends, that number can climb to 80,000.

For years, drivers kept going. Now, a towering blue sign reading"Reba's Place"rises above the road, backed by billboards stretching in both directions. With only capacity to serve and seat 200, on some weekends a little luck and a prayer is the only way to get through the door.

"I've been on Highway 69 all my life, so coming back home is a lot of good memories," McEntire said. "I was born and raised right here on 69 Highway from McAlester, went to school at Kiowa, lived at Chockie on land at Limestone Gap, and then to live in Stringtown, have the restaurant here in Atoka, and then I went to college at Durant."

She opened the restaurant in 2022, converting a restored century-old Masonic Temple.

"This restaurant is three years and four months old,” McEntire said from the stage. "It's been rough. A learning experience for me."

She pointed to the details that make the space hers, from the antique bar to four antique Coliseum seats displayed along the brick wall. Her albums, photos and magazine covers line the walls. She also mentioned that the banana pudding and strawberry cake are her favorite desserts, crediting Chef Kurtess Mortensen and his team.

"Thank God for Chef Kurtess," she said. "It takes a strong leader like that to make something this successful."

So how many tourists come a year? The only estimate from Johnson was hundreds of thousands of visitors. Across the street at theAtoka Cola Soda Shop, store owner Cory Richards said he had a pinboard map where visitors would mark where they came from. Over two years, every state filled in. He added international flags each time a non-American visited, totaling 53.

"We all know God made the moon, but Reba hung it," Richards said.

He grew up knowing McEntire's family. He remembers the work ethic and the sense of humor passed down from her parents before they died. Richards loves to tell the story about McEntire signing cassettes in 1977 at the local Walmart right after she made her first record. He recalled the time that McEntire's mom, Jackie, asked him to help fill up farm ponds with water for the cattle. McEntire's dad, Clark, delivered one of Richards' favorite jokes: "Our wells are so dry the fish have lice."

These days, fans — hoping to get lottery tickets to see the McEntire daughter herself — stop into Richards' candy store for dirty sodas and chocolate truffle balls to pass the time.

Inspiring the next generation of country music singers

Opening actJordan Rainerworked midnight shifts in high school at Daylight Donuts. She saved all her tip money in a jar labeled, "Nashville or bust." Once it reached $1,000, she packed up her car and headed to Music City. Although she grew up knowing all about McEntire, Rainer didn't meet her until she auditioned for The Voice in 2023. McEntire hadn't been announced as a coach, so it was an organic surprise when Rainer belted out the song "Fancy," turning all four chairs.

Jordan Rainer poses in The Voice chair on display in Reba's Place, the restaurant owned by Reba McEntire. Rainer was a contestant on the NBC show in 2023. April 9, 2026.

"Reba is the perfect example of it can be done, not just as an Atoka woman, but as a woman in country music which has been male-dominated for a long time," Rainer said. "Reba was one of the trailblazers that made it easier for people like me to come along."

While the town gathers to celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime voice, McEntire has no plans of opening other eateries. She said that, although she's had offers, there won't be a Broadway honky tonk with her name on it, or another "Reba's Place," any time soon.

"It makes me feel really good that it's just down the street from where we all grew up and mom and daddy lived in Atoka County all their lives," she said. "So it's almost a heritage thing."

Any free time McEntire has is spent gearing up for the third season of the sitcom"Happy's Place,"or with her fiancé and co-star Rex Linn. Linn had a commitment in Oklahoma City preventing him from joining her one night concert in Atoka, but the singer's siblings sat in the booths at the far end of the room.

Some of the fans who had waited hours for a chance to get inside finally made it in. Mikayla Hoult and her father were among those who won seats in the 25-ticket lottery. That mix of near misses and once-in-a-lifetime moments carried into the night's musical debut. McEntire said she discovered "One Night in Tulsa" after hearing a young songwriter's demo and immediately felt a connection to it as an Oklahoma native.

Her voice settled over the crowd for the final lines, inspiring a standing ovation: "I'd spend a month in the desert / just to be together / For one night in Tulsa / One night in Tulsa."

Meghan, 44, constructed a clay ostrich during the pottery session with the children of veterans, known as “doves” by the museum. She told children at the class, “There’s an ostrich farm actually not far from our home."

When a young girl at the class asked her about birds, Meghan said, “My husband will know, my husband knows everything about birds.”

Meanwhile, Harry explained of his creation, “It’s a one-winged kookaburra, it’s very rare,” PA Media reported.

The prince then checked out an installation, created by Kat Rae and Kelly Manning, which was made of polystyrene, shredded paper and cable ties, that spelt out “curiosity."

Harry and Meghan had changed into matching olive green outfits for the outing, with the duchess wearing a mock neck sleeveless sweater by Australian brand P Johnson, which she teamed with a skirt and bomber jacket by fellow Australian brand St. Agni and Aquazzura shoes.

The museum is a veteran-led charity and cultural institution set up to support the wellbeing of current and former Australian military personnel and their families through the arts.

Founded in 2013 by Tanja Johnston, it was established from the “need for innovation and community engagement to address the declining state of veterans wellbeing," and uses exhibitions, creative programs and public engagement to create a platform for veterans to share their stories and experiences.

NEED TO KNOW

  • He returned for Survivor: Micronesia, but was voted off first

  • He has since appeared on E!'s House of Villains

Jon “Jonny Fairplay” Daltonis one of the most notorious villains inSurvivorhistory.

During his first season,Pearl Islands, Fairplay becamea controversial figureon the CBS reality show after he and his friend lied about his grandmother's death so other contestants would let him win a reward challenge. However, in real life, Fairplay's grandmother was alive and at home “watching Jerry Springer."

“[He's] completely despicable, [but] it was actually fun to work with Fairplay on the show because he's a producer's dream,” longtimeSurvivorhost and executive producerJeff ProbsttoldEntertainment Weeklyin February 2005.

For his part, Fairplay is proud of his antics. “The ‘Dead Grandma' lie is still considered one of the greatest moves in the history of not justSurvivor, but reality television as a whole,” he toldEntertainment Weeklyin November 2020.

So, where is Jonny Fairplay now? Here's everything to know about theSurvivorvillain's life today.

What happened to Jonny Fairplay onSurvivor: Pearl Islands?

Survivorfans first met Fairplay onPearl Islandsin 2003, which was the seventh season of the hit competition show. He made a splash by lying about his grandmother's death with the help of his friend, Dan a.k.a. "Thunder Dan," who appeared during the family visit episode.

In the infamousmoment, when Dan showed up, Fairplay asked, "How's Grandma?" Dan solemnly responded, "She died, dude."

In response, the other contestants let Fairplay win the reward challenge, forcing them to move to a separate beach without food or shelter.

In a subsequent confessional, Fairplay explained his rationale for the move, saying, "This is a game for a million dollars. I have one chance in my life at this. You should take every single advantage possible. If you don't, you're a fool."

Dan added that he and Fairplay had cooked up the plan over the phone just before Fairplay left to filmSurvivor.

Ultimately, Fairplay made it to the final three, when Lillian "Lill" Morris chose to takeSandra Diaz-Twineto the end over Fairplay after winning the final immunity challenge.

“Lill decided that she would guarantee the winner by letting Sandra go to the final two. She didn't give the jury the opportunity to choose a winner,” Fairplay claimed toEntertainment Weekly. “I think that's kinda crappy. But I also think that's why we now have a final three.”

Diaz-Twine indeed went on to win the series and become one of only two two-timeSurvivorwinners alongsideTony Vlachos.

Fairplay was thrilled with how he was portrayed on the show, despite receiving criticism for some of his more controversial moves.

“It was me,” he toldEntertainment Weekly. “My heroes growing up were Roddy Piper and Ric Flair. I got to bring all of their villainy to the world of reality TV.”

What happened to Jonny Fairplay onSurvivor: Micronesia?

With his villainous moves and signature blond curls, Fairplay made a splash on TV. But just a year later, Probst claimed he was “done with Fairplay” after he got into an argument with the host's brother at the 2004Survivor: Vanuatufinale afterparty and was subsequently banned from allSurvivorevents, perEntertainment Weekly.

“He's an absolute jackass whose actions ... pissed me off so much that he's banned from any event that I'm at from now on,” Probst said.

However, Fairplay was invited to appear on season 16,Micronesia — Fans vs. Favorites, in 2007 — though not by Probst's choice.

"My first vote was we don't need him,” the host said. ”Send him home. Make a point that there is a level of participant that we don't need on this show. CBS said, ‘That's interesting, Jeff — you can leave now.' So my vote doesn't count for anything.”

But Fairplay was ultimately sent home first after he encouraged his tribemates to vote him out so he could be with his then-girlfriend, Michelle Deighton, who was pregnant at the time.

“Michelle and I had made a pact right before I left that if anything were to go wrong — she was seven months pregnant at the time — for her not to tell CBS because I didn't want that to distract me from my game out there,” he told PEOPLE in February 2008. “When I got out there I was like, ‘That was stupid,' and I just started thinking the worst.”

Additionally, Fairplay claimed he had recently undergone surgery following a physical altercation with radio personality Danny Bonaduce at the FOX Reality Awards and was still in a lot of pain.

"I had the 15 hours of surgery, four root canals ... when I got out to the island, the pain was ridiculous," he said. “Jonny Fairplay just finally had his breaking point."

Has Jonny Fairplay appeared on any other reality shows?

Fairplay has been no stranger to reality TV over the years. In 2009, he appeared onThe Celebrity NewlywedGamewith his then-wife Deighton, where they beat out Monkees musician Davy Jones.

Fans have also spotted him onFear Factor: Reality Stars,Celebrity Poker ShowdownandPawn Stars, where he sold a signed piece of Red Hot Chili Peppers memorabilia in 2015.

In recent years, he competed on season 1 of E!'sHouse of Villains, where he made it to the finale but ultimately lost, and FOX'sThe Floor.

“My strategy is to be the most strategic person here,” he said in a promotionalvideoof his gameplay inHouse of Villains. “Chaos will ensue!”

Fairplay dabbled in professional wrestling for a few years before and after hisSurvivorappearances, signing to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling afterPearl Islands.

Fairplay became a dad for the first time in January 2008, when he welcomed daughter Piper Addison with Deighton, whom he later wed. In October 2023,he got engagedto girlfriend Jessica Kendrick, whom he first met during a Botox appointment.

In December 2020, Fairplay and his mother, Patsy Hall, were arrested and accused of stealing bar stools, a leather chair, an end table and a silver necklace valued at $5,000 from his grandmother, Jean Cook. Thecharges were later dismissed.

In February 2025, his grandmotherEllen Jean Hauser diedmore than two decades after Fairplay lied about her death.

"I'll miss her every day," he said in a statement. "It's easy to think she was just part of one of the biggest lies in TV history, which made me famous, but I look at her place in my life as a loving grandparent who only wanted the best for me in my life and would do anything to help me get it. Which she did."

Now, Fairplay frequently hostsSurvivor 50viewing parties all over the country alongside other legends likeRichard Hatch, Sugar Kiper and Todd Herzog, and hostsThe Reality After Show Podcast. He also makes videos forSurvivorfans onCameo.

“For all that is sacred, YES [I want to play again]!” he toldEntertainment Weeklyin November 2020. “I used to say, only if it's legends. But I don't care what the theme is at this point. I feel I'm one of the greatest players of all time and I want to prove it.”

He continued, “I want my daughters to watch me play in the modern era ofSurvivorand I want them to be proud of their dad."
